Universalism and Reasons
11. December 2009 by Nathan.
This post is going to be pretty inchoate; it’s just going to be me putting down some thoughts I’ve been having on how to make sense of the claim that morality is universal.

“Reasons and Reason” Final Draft Submitted
9. December 2009 by Raleigh Miller.
I’ve submitted my final draft for Dr. Svavarsdottir’s seminar on reasons for action. The final(ish) draft can be found on the “Raleigh’s stuff” page. It’s not my best paper, but it’s my first as a PhD student; that’s rather exciting I think. My thanks to Dan Issler, Ben Sheredos, Paul Pfeilscheifter, Dan Burnston and Justin Bernstein. Their comments were incisive and insightful; I was only able to improve the paper so much, and I think some of their most penetrating concerns remain concerning, but the paper is certainly far better than it was for their contribution.

I have finished the first draft of my first term paper as a PhD Student. Anyone who is interested in providing comments upon the paper, here it is. I’d also ask, especially if you’ve never edited with me before, that you look over this.

My Argument about Pizza and God
12. February 2009 by Raleigh Miller.
I’m writing a paper right now that I’m pretty excited about. One in which I actually come to the defense of Divine Command Theory. The allegedly damning argument contra DCT says “If God has reasons for commanding some action A, than it is God’s reasons, and not God’s having commanded thusly, which make A morally correct.” Put that together with a line about how if God doesn’t have reasons, he’s arbitrary, and morality can’t be arbitrary, and you seem to have put the nail in the coffin, wrapped the DCTist in an inescapable dilemma. I think both of those premises are false. Read the rest of this entry »
