Leibniz On Causation

I’ve just completed and submitted a paper on Leibniz’s view of intrasubstantial monadic causation.  The paper was an evaluation of the “monadic states as formal and final causes of their subsequent states” model.  It can be found with the rest of my papers.

“Reasons and Reason” Final Draft Submitted

I’ve submitted my final draft for Dr. Svavarsdottir’s seminar on reasons for action.  The final(ish) draft can be found on the “Raleigh’s stuff” page. It’s not my best paper, but it’s my first as a PhD student; that’s rather exciting I think. My thanks to Dan Issler, Ben Sheredos, Paul Pfeilscheifter, Dan Burnston and Justin Bernstein.  Their comments were incisive and insightful; I was only able to improve the paper so much, and I think some of their most penetrating concerns remain concerning, but the paper is certainly far better than it was for their contribution.

“Reasons and Reason” Draft

I have finished the first draft of my first term paper as a PhD Student.  Anyone who is interested in providing comments upon the paper, here it is.  I’d also ask, especially if you’ve never edited with me before, that you look over this.

Introducing: The Bish

(Wanting to give credit where credit is due, I should say the following right out of the gate: I owe my conception of the BISH to Dr. Andrea Scarantino of Georgia State University.  The day I heard Dr. Scarantino lecture on the BISH I walked out of the classroom a better writer, not yet having even written anything. )

So, one of my goals for this blog has always been to have a place where I can post rough drafts of papers and open them up to peer scrutiny.  This is becoming all the more appropriate, as my group regular editors spreads out across the country, and as my twitter account approaches and exceeds 100 followers (you can follow me at www.twitter.com/raleighmiller) most of whom are philosophers.  That’s a lot of possible editors, and it doesn’t even include Ohio State University peers.  I’m hoping I can utilize these various social media to make sure that all my work is sincerely and thoroughly vetted.  I am always willing to provide this service to others, provided I have the time (and usually I make time). This post is intended to illustrate the kind of help I’m asking for when solicit peer editors, and the kind of help I intend to give when the same is solicited of me.  I’d like to introduce you to the BISH. Ohio State ball gets rolling

I’ve now moved to Columbus OH, and i’m waiting for classes to begin at OSU.  Today, along with four other incoming graduate students, I’m taking a test to get out of logic 250.  Tomorrow there is a series of meetings and get-to-know you type events.  Finally classes begin on Wednesday.  This Wednesday i’m sitting in on Shabel’s PhilMath class, which I probably won’t end up taking.  Thursday is the Pro-seminar (on the mind body problem), and early next week are the first sessions of Declan Smithies’s “Consciousness” Seminar and Sigrun Svavarsdottir’s “Reasons” Seminar.  Looks like I’m doing straight up contemporary analytic philosophy, M&E, conceptual analysis etc. this semester.

Here goes…

Summer Productivity

I have a well established history of making elaborate plans to get things done during breaks, and then not doing any of it.  This is no longer acceptable.  I’ve already witnessed my not-quite-good-enough efforts at researching over the last week, since I defended my thesis on Monday the 27th.  But I need to hit the ground running when I arrive at OSU in September, and I need to spend the next four months nurturing pro-active positive research habits, and familiarizing myself with some important work.  This is all the more pressing, since I’ve only got two years left of taking classes; after that, everything is self-motivated; after the spring of 2011, the beginning and end of semesters will only be relevant to my teaching responsibilities, and nearly entirely immaterial to my research.  The next four months offer the best opportunity to foster a 9-5, iron clad research schedule that will serve me well when publishing and thesis work become key.

Master’s Thesis

I’ve uploaded my master’s thesis onto the Paper’s page.  I don’t think that the final product is actually my best work (”Two-Dimensions” is probably the best work I’ve done to date) but writing it was definitely a rewarding experience.

Defended

This morning I successfully defended my thesis, entitling me to my Master’s degree from Georgia State University’s Philosophy Department.  The thesis was titled Kantian Conceptualism and Apperception.  Tomorrow, while administering one of the three exams that constitute my final duties as a Georgia State student, I will begin summer reading.  I have decided that one of the ways in which I will utilize this blog is to begin an annotated bibliography of all of the book chapters and articles that I read.  Look for that in the coming months.

Ohio State University

This morning I accepted an offer of admission to Ohio State University’s Phd program in philosophy.  I will be spending the next 5-6 years in Columbus, Ohio.

Workshop on Kant and Nonconceptual Content

I want to go here.

If you want to know where to send checks in order to contribute to the “send Raleigh to Luxembourg to discuss his thesis with Robert Hanna” fund, indicate your interest in the comments.

Haha.  Just kidding.  No one comments.
